Add four killer looks to your portfolio

The goal of each Portfolio Development Workshop is to challenge you to step out of your creative comfort zone under Brian’s expert guidance and coaching. During the session you will learn practical techniques used by professional photographers and then put these to practice while shooting an agency standard model. At the end of the session you will have captured four unique and versatile looks that will take your portfolio to the next level.

Because no two photographers are the same each Portfolio Development Workshop is slightly different to allow Brian to provide personalised coaching on the areas you struggle most. If you answer yes to any of the questions below, the Portfolio Development Workshop was developed specifically with you in mind.

  1. Are you stuck in a rut and shooting the same thing over and over again?
  2. Are you trying to find your own unique photography style?
  3. Are you lacking inspiration or finding yourself imitating others?
  4. Are you struggling with taking your ideas and turning them into a work of art?
  5. Are you intimidated by models and finding it difficult to provide direction?

Here is how the day is structured

HOUR ONE: We’ve found that the best way to start each session is with a one to one discussion on any specific areas that you would like to focus on during the session. This is done prior to the model arriving to allow for a candid conversation and look through your existing portfolio. This is also a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of what you are trying to achieve long term with your photography so any advice given throughout the day can be as relevant as possible.

HOUR TWO: Now that the model has arrived we will begin to work on your directing models skills! After meeting the model we will begin shooting portrait/beauty style photos while practicing verbal and non-verbal techniques that can be used to capture movement, build expressions, tell a story and most of all keep the relationship between you and the model fun and relaxed. If you want your looks to seem natural and less posed you will learn invaluable techniques on how to interact with models during this part of the session.

HOUR THREE: Next up we will take the skills you have developed for directing models and add another element, styling… Not only will you learn about the less fun stuff like model releases and photo ID we will also cover whether or not you should create a mood board, what wardrobe Brian asks every model to bring to shoots and how to style interesting, non cliche looks. We will bring all of this information together by shooting a killer fashion look.

HOUR FOUR: Now that you can direct models and style like a boss it’s time to take things outdoors and add location shooting to the mix. During this portion of the day you will learn how to pick a location, what makes locations interesting to look at, what equipment to select, choosing your lighting and composition considerations for your style photography.

HOUR FIVE: For the final look of the day we will refine everything you have learnt so far and discuss how to develop your own unique style, why it’s important to create a unified “look” across your portfolio and how to create mood. To bring this all together we will use the rapport we’ve developed with the model throughout the session and shoot a fashion nude look.

HOUR SIX: Once the final look of the day is shot the model will go home and we will use this last hour to debrief. This will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about anything that happened during the day and for us to discuss any observations Brian made during the shoot. Dependent on time can also discuss post production for the shoot.

The (not so) secret life of Brian VENTH

What we can say about Brian VENTH is that without a doubt, his approach to teaching photography is like no other. If you’ve been to workshops before you may be familiar with a workshop style where the instructor will style a look, choose the location and the put together a lighting setup that each participant will shoot while the instructor stands back and observes. Brian’s workshops could be no further from this.

In fact Brian prides himself on complete transparency with his students and believes that holding back knowledge demonstrates that a teacher is either selfish, scared to be surpassed or even worse, can’t actually deliver what they claim they can.

Throughout sessions with Brian you’ll not only have the opportunity to style creative looks with him on hand to provide professional advice, you’ll also have the unique opportunity to observe Brian as he directs and sets up shots in his own distinct style. You’ll be encouraged to challenge the way you approach directing models with the aim of being able to create the shot you are looking for without having to over direct or pose the model. This ensures that you take amazing shots while still capturing the models unique style and personality.

Brian is always asking why and manages to teach concepts that once seemed complicated in a simple and easy to understand way and during the session will ask you to work on weaknesses that you might not know exist, pushing you to step up your photography game and become a better photographer.
