Goals and priorities in fact go together hand in hand. A goal is the destination that you are travelling towards and priorities are the decisions that you make on a day to day basis that can either take you closer or further away from your goals.

Priorities… Identifying what they are for you and understanding the underlying reasons for why they are your priorities will not only make everything in your life a lot more simple, it will also help you achieve your goals.

But I know what you are thinking, I’m too young / old for a 5 or 10 year plan. Heck if you’re anything like me sticking to my 5 hour plan is touch and go. But that is because people are teaching you to create the wrong kind of goals. Everyone focuses on the practical. What job do you want to do, how much money do you want to have, where do you want to travel to?

Not to say that these aren’t great goals but so many of us don’t have this much definitive vision for what we want to do with our lives. This type of thinking only really works for formal education and career driven individuals and all of our education systems, government and even family pushes us towards these type of goals thinking that they are looking after our best interests.

Where does that leave us? Feeling like we are a disappointment and like we haven’t got our proverbial shit together.

Here’s the solution though. Your goals can be related to anything! They can be emotional or spiritual goals, health and fitness goals, wealth goals, family and friendship goals, travel goals, lifestyle, fashion and the list goes on. The common theme here is identifying what makes you happy. When setting your goal don’t think about how you are going to get there, when starting any journey you need to decide where to go first then you can plan your journey.

Try this chose a time period of either 5 or 10 years from today (whichever gives you the most freedom to get crazy with your dreams), remembering that in 5 years you could be a fully qualified lawyer even with no training at all so these are long periods of time literally anything is achievable!

Now imagine what your life looks like… Where do you live? What is your health like? Do you travel? Are you married? Do you have kids? Are you partying every day? Are you on stage? There is no right or wrong answer here, and don’t change what your first reaction is based on what you think you “should” do, your first idea is actually the thing that will make you happy, it is your passion and it doesn’t matter what it is (as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else).

The more clear that these emotional and lifestyle goals are to you then the easier it is to come back to the reality of where you are today and start making a plan to get there! No you know what your ideal life looks like then from now on your priority is make choices that get you a step closer to you ideal life.

Want to be famous? Then find your talent and start promoting yourself, get out to events and parties. Etc… Not saying that you can’t change your mind, but funnily enough you will find that approaching goal setting in this way will make not only the goal the thing you want but it will also help you enjoy the journey!

Just remember this one simple fact… You can monetize anything! No shit… Cigarettes kill people and not only do people buy them, but they are considered in a lot of circles to be a symbol of being cool. I’ll say it again… You can monetize ANYTHING!
